The Ducks Give Kunitz a Four-Year Extension
The Anaheim Ducks inked left-winger Chris Kunitz to a $14.9-million US, four-year contract extension on Monday.

The 27-year-old scored 25 goals to earn 60 points and boasted a plus-23 rating in 81 regular-season games last season.

Kunitz also helped the Ducks in their Stanley Cup run last season and managed to score a goal and earn five points in the playoffs.

The Regina native will earn $1.15 million in the last year of his old deal this season. After the new contract begins the club will pay him $3.5 million in 2008-09, $3.6 million in 2009-10, $3.8 million in 2010-11 and $4 million in 2011-12.

"Chris has been a very important multi-dimensional player for us the last two seasons, providing skill, physical play and leadership," Ducks GM Brian Burke said in a statement.”

Kunitz was signed as an un-drafted free agent by the Ducks in 2003. He started the 2005-06 NHL season on Anaheim's roster, but was sent to the Atlanta Thrashers off of waivers, playing two games for them. Two weeks later he was re-claimed off of waivers back to the Ducks where he elevated his game as he set a club rookie point scoring record of 41, recording 19 goals and adding 22 assists in 67 games.

In the 2006-07 NHL Season, Kunitz qualified for the playoffs with the Anaheim Ducks and helped them  oust the Minnesota Wild, the Vancouver Canucks, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Ottawa Senators in the final act to win his first Stanley Cup Championship. He was injured during the series against the Red Wings, but returned late in the Stanley Cup Final against Ottawa to help clinch the championship in game 5.
