Dave Dombroski tackled The Tigers’ future battles with the
Indians, Red Sox and Yankees already and made a smart move, even though there
are mixed opinions concerning the price of this step.
Edgar Renteria is the off-season deal that keeps fans busy
talking about it. The 32-year old had
only 124 occasions to prove his skills due to a bad ankle, but what he
demonstrated is not to be left out. He hit .332 with 12 homers with The Braves
the last season and seems a promising shortstop for The Tigers, with whom he finalized
the deal on Monday.
But the price of the trade is unexpectedly high. The
exchange of Renteria from The Braves for Gorkys Hernandez and Jair Jurrjens is
under a big question-mark. The Braves lose the shortstop of the five-time
All-Star, but gain the energetic outfielder that Hernandez constitutes. The
20-year old was named the Midwest League's Most Valuable Player, after succeeding
to hit .293 with 54 stolen bases for Class A West Michigan.
Furthermore, a right-handed pitcher like Jurrjens is not
something not to be taken into consideration, given the fact that he was
subject of a call to the Majors in August. Jurrjens was called the Eastern
League's third-best pitching prospect, after this year’s outstanding 7-5 with a
3.20 ERA in 19 starts for Double-A Erie.
