Amazon Issues Takedown Notice Over E-book Script
Amazon sent MobileRead.com a legal notice earlier this week, concerning the distribution of software that they say violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. According to Amazon’s policy, Kindle users are only supposed to purchase titles from their library. However, the piece of software in question allows users to purchase titles from other shops as well.

As MobileRead’s Alexander Turcic wrote on the company’s blog, the kindlepid.py is a Python script that allows users to derive a Mobilpocket-compatible personal identified (PID) to make legitimate purchases from other stores.

“Although we never hosted this tool (contrary to their claim), nor believe that this tool is used to remove technological measures (contrary to their claim), we decided, due to the vagueness of the DMCA law, to voluntarily follow their request and links and detailed instructions related to it,” he wrote.

While this whole idea doesn’t seem to be much of a problem for Amazon, it looks like the company (who was not willing to make any more comments) was bothered by it. The strange part is that the author of the software has posted instructions and a copy of it on a blog for quite some time now, and Amazon did nothing to react.

The software doesn’t support piracy, so it shouldn’t cause Amazon any losses. However, it looks like Amazon wants to put a stop to it, although we’ll still have to wait to get an official reaction from them on this one.
