Fruit Drink or Poison? Ten Children Mistakenly Drank Wiper-Fluid
Ten children accidentally drank windshield wiper fluid after a staff member mistakenly put the liquid in the refrigerator and ten served it to children. The children, between 2 and 7 years of age were rushed to hospital, and fortunately, no one was seriously injured. Only one child remained in the hospital care due to blood levels of methanol. This highly toxic alcoholic substance can cause coma or blindness.

It appears that the liquid was served to the children as fruit drink. Doctors at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock estimated the kids drank about an ounce before realizing their glasses did not contain Kool-Aid.

“It was just a mistake, she [Bynum] says. She says it was just a horrible mistake,” Julie Munsell, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Human Services said, according to media reports.

Julie Munsell also said that Carolyn Bynum, 63, who holds the license to the day care in a house at 1264 Kesl Road, was closing the day care and surrendered her license. Because she surrendered her day care operating license, she will have to reapply to the state if she wants to resume work.

The Human Services Department on Friday continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials say there is no indication so far that the children were poisoned intentionally.
