Podolski and Schweinsteiger may head in different directions
Germany's famous football duo Poldi and Schweini could be separated again at club level as Lukas Podolski and Bastian Schweinsteiger have been linked with moves away from Bayern Munich.

The Bild daily said on Monday that Podolski, 23, has had enough of his role as reserve player and told club officials he wants to leave the Bundesliga champions during the winter break.

The same day Kicker sports magazine reported that a Real Madrid representative was due in Munich this week to talk to the 24-year-old midfielder Schweinsteiger, who can leave on a free transfer in summer and has also been linked with Italian clubs.

Podolski and Schweinsteiger were the toast of the Germany team at the 2006 World Cup and despite their young age have already won 60 and 62 caps, respectively.

But while Schweinsteiger is a regular starter in Munich under new coach Juergen Klinsmann as well, the striker Podolski has never lived up to his Germany form at the club.

Podolski came to Munich in 2006 for 10 million euros (12.6 million dollars) from Cologne but has played just 58 games and scored a meagre 12 goals, far less than the 31 for Germany.

According to Bild, his long frustration has now led to action.

"I have told those responsible that I want to leave in winter," Podolski was quoted as telling Bild. "I have reached the decision that I want to leave the club in winter."

Podolski has been frequently linked with a return to his home club Cologne, but Munich general manager Uli Hoeness reiterated on the weekend that no player will leave during the winter break.

Munich have also started talks with Schweinsteiger about a contract renewal beyond 2009 but appear to face more and more prominent rivals from abroad.

Kicker said that Real's technical director Miguel Angel Portugal was scheduled to meet the player and his representatives this week.

Also on Monday, Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport linked Schweinsteiger with a move to Juventus. The report said that Juve have prepared an offer for a four-year contract and an annual salary of 3.5 million euros should Schweinsteiger decide against Munich.

AC Milan are reportedly also after the midfielder while Kicker speculated that Munich could ready to almost double his current salary of an estimated at 3 million euros.

Schweinsteiger has said that he will talk with Bayern first but that he could also imagine playing in another country.
