Superhero stories are a thing of the past, for moviegoers at least. Disney's family adventure "Race to Witch Mountain" outran Warner Bros.' "Watchmen" grossing $25 million according to Sunday's estimates from Media by Numbers. Starring former wrestler Dwayne Johnson and directed by Andy Fickman, "Witch Mountain," a remake of the classic franchise, became the second best opening ever for Dwayne alone, and Disney's first No. 1 debut this year. "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" opened in second place and "Confessions of a Shopaholic" was fourth. Both came out last month. Mark Zoradi, president of Disney's motion-picture group, said analysts had predicted that "Race to Witch Mountain" would fly away with $20 million or less. The movie was also expected to appeal families with children, but 18% of the audience was couples without children. "I think audiences this weekend were really drawn to the action adventure of 'Race to Witch Mountain,'" said Zoradi. "There was also this element of parents over 30 who remembered the original and were drawn to this one, so I think that combination is what helped us exceed what folks in the industry thought this movie was going to do." Dropping a hefty 67% from its opening weekend, "Watchmen" grossed an estimated $18.1 million from 3,611 runs in its second place for a 10-day total of $86 million. Another new remake of the weekend, Universal's "The Last House on the Left," placed third with nearly $15 million in sales. 20th Century Fox's thriller "Taken" remained at No. 4 with about $7 million in its seventh weekend in theaters. Rounding up the top five was Tyler Perry's "Madea Goes to Jail" with $5.1 million.
